Steeplechase VLC

The Steeplechase Visual Logic Controller (VLC) is a software tool designed for the development of control schemes used in industrial automation. VLC supports a scalable line of controller platforms including  a generic PC runtime target that can achieve scan times as low as 200 microseconds.

Steeplechase VLC features

The VLC engineering tool uses an intuitive flowchart programming language and includes a powerful instruction set to tackle the most difficult programming tasks. VLC supports connectivity to a variety of the most commonly used I/O fieldbus networks including Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP, Profibus, Interbus and Devicenet. An integrated OPC server provides the ability to visualize controller runtime data, through a single tag database, with a wide variety of HMI products including the Iconics MachineWorX and Citect HMI products that can be bundled with the VLC.

Engineering Tool

  • Intuitive, visual flowchart programming language
  • Highly advanced instruction set including trigonometric, Boolean and string handling functions as well as advanced iteration constructs
  • Single tag database includes the following data types: bit, byte, word, integer, 64-bit floating point, string, timers, I/O and powerful multi-dimensional arrays
  • Patented Exception Handling feature eliminates redundant coding
  • Subroutine capability enables creation of reusable libraries

Runtime Target Platforms

  • Steeplechase VLC supports a scalable line of runtime targets including a generic PC-based runtime
  • The VLC runtime provides repeatable, deterministic performance while allowing the programmer set the scan rate for a given application
  • PC-based runtimes are deployed inside the Intime RTOS kernel and can achieve hard real-time, deterministic scan rates as low as 200 microseconds
  • PC-based runtimes can also be deployed with in a multi-core CPU environment
  • Integrated OPC server for serving up runtime data to other Windows applications

I/O Fieldbus Connectivity

  • Ethernet/IP, Modbus TCP/IP
  • Integrated sockets interface for sending and receiving raw TCP/IP packets
  • INTERBUS, Profibus, Devicenet

 Runtime Monitoring and Debugging

  • Integrated online debugging tool
  • Watch window for monitoring and forcing I/O values
  • On-line programming
  • On-line cross referencing
  • Execution trails provide real-time and historical logic solve information

HMI Functionality

  • An integrated OPC server provides the ability to visualize controller runtime data with any OPC capable HMI product
  • Steeplechase VLC currently bundles several Windows based software tools for building HMI screens. These bundled HMI tools include a reduced functionality version of Citect as well as the Iconics MachineWorX product
  • Both HMI schemes provide an upgrade path for full SCADA functionality

Transaction Express is a feature that provides HMI-independent access to Steeplechase VLC Runtime data. You can use Transaction Express to write files, read and write databases, or transfer data between nodes (PCs) on a network using Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ). Transaction Express uses an XML configuration file to describe required processing steps. Transaction Express can be installed on a computer with or without Steeplechase VLC.

Transaction Express provides HMI-independent access to databases and other Windows facilities from the Steeplechase VLC Runtime using Runtime tags. Transaction Express uses a configuration tile to define its interaction with the Steeplechase VLC Runtime. In addition to providing flexible access to databases. Transaction Express also supports data transfer between nodes using MSMQ and the ability to write files. Using Transaction Express without custom C/C++, VB or HMI code, you can retrieve recipe data from local or remote databases, store and retrieve calibration data sets, log messages to a file, or perform other operations that move data to and from the Steeplechase VLC Runtime.
