Serial Device Servers

Serial Device Servers  are the most cost-effective solution to convert serial data to Ethernet data. Even your legacy software applications can be fooled into thinking it is using a serial port on your workstation by using a Virtual COM Port Redirector. This all happens without changing much of the existing setup.

Networking and Comms

The Multenet Router is an enhancement of the versatile PocketPAD Router. It now includes USB Multenet Routerconnectivity that provides enhanced expandibilty options as well as built in VPN functionality to cater for businesses or the individual who requires a secure and reliable asynchronous router. The Multenet Router, connected to an external serial or USB modem provides secure cellular GSM/GPRS, 3G/HSDPA or PSTN connections for reliable primary and backup network connectivity to corporate networks or the internet.

Applications

The PocketPAD Buffer will buffer received serial data to non-volatile storage when no TCP connection is PocketPAD Bufferestablished. The PocketPAD Buffer will act as a standard serial-to-Ethernet converter when a TCP connection is established. The PocketPAD can be used as a stand-alone desktop or mounted on a DIN-rail.

The PocketPAD Java is a serial device server supporting an embedded Java Virtual Machine (JVM). This PocketPAD Javainnovation is ideal for the user who wants to run custom Java applications directly on the device. The PocketPAD Java has four RS232 Serial ports and one Ethernet port which is 10/100 BaseT auto-sensing.

Commercial Device Servers

The PocketPAD 1 is a low-cost, light-weight device server connecting an asynchronous serial device to PocketPAD 1Ethernet networks. The PocketPAD can be used as a stand-alone desktop or mounted on a DIN-rail.

This product range includes the following hardware configurations:
- One RS232 serial to 10/100 Base-T Ethernet
- One RS232/RS422/RS485 serial to 10/100 Base-T Ethernet

The PocketPAD 4 is a low-cost, light-weight device server connecting four asynchronous serial devices to PocketPAD 4Ethernet networks. The PocketPAD can be used as a stand-alone desktop or mounted on a DIN-rail.

This product range includes the following hardware configurations:
- Four RS232 serial to 10/100 Base-T Ethernet
- Three RS232 and one RS232/RS422/RS485 serial to 10/100 Base-T Ethernet

Premium Device Servers

The EtherPAD Lite is a versatile, entry-level connectivity device that can be used in stand-alone, DIN rail or EtherPAD Lite19" rack-mount applications. It requires an external power supply and has a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet interface and a RS232/RS422/RS485 serial interface connecting an asynchronous serial device to an Ethernet network.

This product range includes the following hardware configurations:
- Manual or auto-selectable 10/100 Base-T Ethernet to one software selectable RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial ports.

The EtherPAD Duo is a versatile device that can be used in stand-alone, DIN rail or 19" rack-mount EtherPAD Duoapplications. It requires an external power supply and has a 10/100 Base-T Ethernet interface and two RS232/RS422/RS485 serial interfaces.

This product range includes the following hardware configurations:
- Manual or auto-selectable 10/100 Base-T Ethernet to two software selectable RS232, RS422 or RS485 serial ports

and the following key-enabled software options are available:
Data Logging, Scripting, PPP, Routing, Modbus Scripting, Modbus Bridge

Connecting Legacy Systems

The requirement to move from legacy manufacturing systems to improved systems where data can be analysed at a central location is becoming more viable as costs and manpower decrease. Ethernet infrastructure is usually in existence, or can be easily implemented. Buildings tend to have existing Ethernet networks. PLC manufacturers are starting to develop Ethernet add-ons to network their PLCs, although you tend to pay a premium for this functionality.

Scripting Services

Should you require a scripting service as a result of your smart device server being too complex, or too little time being available, please enquire about a quotation to do this for you. Our application support engineers have extensive experience in the development of scripts for a variety of applications.

Ethernet Encapsulation

Ethernet Encapsulation provides a virtual serial port on your workstation. Use existing serial drivers in the OPC server to communicate to your networked PLCs as if they were connected directly to your workstation. Multenet products, like the PocketPAD or EtherPAD, provide the Ethernet connection for your PLC through which the OPC server sends data. You can now connect all your serial devices to the network, with the OPC server collecting data to a central server without running extra 3rd party Virtual COM Port Redirector applications.

Serial Anywhere

Serial Anywhere Virtual COM Port Redirector Software. Redirect virtual COM ports over Ethernet to your remote serial device via a PocketPAD or EtherPAD. One of the many uses for Serial Anywhere is to allow devices that only support serial port communications, to join the Internet community.

Serial Anywhere allows you share any of your serial devices, whether it is a bar code scanner, modem, sensor, oscilloscope, laboratory or industrial instrument, etc. over a LAN or the Internet. There is no need to move this equipment here and there, just connect it to a server computer, create a Shared COM Port, and anyone with Serial Anywhere installed will be able to use this equipment remotely as if it were connected to his/her computer.
